DEW21 Landfill Gas Plant II: Compressor – Running
Garbage can be used to generate energy. This is done by landfill gas plants such as the one by DEW21 in Dortmund Grevel. The plant, which has been built in 1993, burns the gas that is issued by the garbage at the city dump site within a block heat and power plant.
By generating a vacuum, the compressor pumps the gas from the landfill to the gas motor of the power plant. Along the way it compresses the gas to about 190 millibar. This compressor (Type GM 50 L) was built by Aerzener Maschinenfabrik GmbH in 1992. Four of these compressors are used at the landfill gas plant in Dortmund Grevel. Each of them can pump and compress 570 cubic metres of gas per hour.
