Airplane Military Aircraft Saab J 29 Tunnan Swedish Airforce

Saab J 29 Tunnan (The Flying Barrel)

Saab J 29 Tunnan is one of the first modern jet airplanes. Tunnan was a fighter airplane but was also used for reconnaissance. The construction of this airplane was mostly based on German research from the end of the Second World War. Tunnan was for its time a very advanced airplane with the most modern technology. It had for example; swept wings, something new at that time. Tunnan was produced by Saab for the Swedish Air force.
The nick name “The Flying Barrel” came from its barrel shaped body. The first test flight took place in 1948 and the airplane was produced up until 1956. Tunnan was revoked from service in 1967.
The plane heard in this recording is Saab J 29 F Gul Rudolf. This is the only copy of the airplane still flying.
