The 4N type tram – the door

The sound of doors opening and closing in an 4N tram car.

The tram car that has been recorded was produced in 1949 as the N car and was modernised as type 4N in the 1960s. In N cars upgraded to type 4N, the doors are opened and closed automatically via a chain transmission powered by a motor from a Celma drill.

The tram belongs to Miejskie Przedsiębiorstwo Komunikacyjne S.A. public transport company in Krakow and during the recording it was being exhibited at the Museum of Urban Engineering. The car is in operation and is occasionally used in the streets of Krakow. The 4N type tramcar recordings were used in the audiovisual installation "The Ghost Tram" under the "Sounds of Changes" project.
